This week, the focus was on Peter and the Wolf, since Symphony of the Southwest is coming to Archway Chandler next week.
Kindergarten through third grade looked at the story of Peter and the Wolf. They discussed the characters (Peter, Grandfather, the Bird, the Duck, the Cat, the Wolf, and the Hunters) and their characteristics that could be applied to music (quiet/loud, fast/slow, heavy/light, high notes/low notes, happy/sad/scary). Then students acted out the characters, with and without music.
First grade practiced listening to the timbre of unpitched percussion (game: could they tell apart the instruments just by listening) and reviewed the names of treble lines and spaces. Kindergarten developed improvisational movement skills in a game involving modes of transportation ("can you show me how you would fly a plane?"). Both grade continued working on Spring concert songs.
Second and third grade were sent home with fliers for the Matsuri festival this weekend and reminded that observing a musical performance and writing about it would count as extra credit. Kindergarten and first grade are also encouraged to go!
