Q3W4 Update

Last week, grades 1-3 took their solfege exam on Fa and Ti and did very well! 1st grade learned about the timbre of instruments (specifically wood, metal, and skins) and learned about overtures through Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Kindergarten explored melodic contour and vocal qualities. Second and third grade learned about the science of string instruments and worked on reviewing their previously learned historical composers. All grades practiced concert music.

Q3W3 Update

This week, 3rd grade began writing their musical composition: rhythm only. They have written both their A section and B section, in preparation for writing melody once the treble clef has been covered. They also began to review music history. 2nd grade began to learn about the Strings family in the orchestra, and worked on reading treble clef spaces as well as their concert music.

1st grade worked on their song Banana! and aurally distinguishing quarter and eighth rhythms. Kindergarten, in addition to moving to a poem (The Robin by Mother Goose), listened to Beethoven's 5th and Pastoral symphonies and compared the two.

Q3W2 Update

This week, First grade learned about Swan Lake, learned their Song of the Month (The Camptown Races), how to write quarter and eighth notes, created their own sets of four-beat measures, sight-read a Sol and Mi melody, did some instrumental improvisation, and worked on two of their SPring Concert songs: You're A Grand Old Flag and Banana!



Kindergarten learned their Song of the Month (Apples and Bananas), did dance improvisation, high vs. low notes, learned about Beethoven, and worked on two of their Spring Concert songs: The Green Grass Grows All Around and Home on the Range. In the video we watched about Beethoven, there was a website from the official Beethoven-Haus Bonn Association, which is the "leading Beethoven centre" and "strives to preserve Beethoven's work and heritage." Second grade reviewed bar lines and time signatures, worked on reading and playing the spaces in the treble clef, looked at some melodic dictation, had a mini quiz on time signatures/bar lines, and began work on two of their Spring Concert songs: Mango Walk! and Dona Nobis Pacem.



Third grade learned When the Saints Go Marching In, started to learn about major vs. minor scales, worked on their Armed Forces Salute for the upcoming concert, discussed Beethoven's 9th symphony and Ode to Joy, performed a mirroring activity, and worked on some of their Spring Concert music: Bound For Glory and Hitori.



Mallet Madness reviewed instrument names and playing technique and explored improvisation and performance.

Students must wear black on bottom, white on top. Black shoes, black pants (black skirt option for girls), white shirt, and a tie for boys (bowtie is fine).

I must know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if a student cannot attend the mandatory concert for an unavoidable reason.
