Week 3 - now with concert music!

To listen to a song/practice it at home, just click the link!

This week, Kindergarten really solidified the first half of Simple Gifts, as well as began learning more of Frosty the Snowman. First Grade can now sing the entirety of This Little Light of Mine, and is about to begin learning Hava Nagilah. Second Grade now can sing all of Tongo, although it is still a rough draft. Third grade has now learned all of Canoe Song. 3A and 3C sing Part 1 and 3B sings Part 2.

Both 2nd and 3rd grade continue to develop their knowledge of reading rhythms (quarter note, half note, etc). Kindergarten and 1st grade are also developing experience with rhythm and keeping a beat. Kindergarten and 3rd grade are listening to Bach, and 2nd and 3rd grade learned a little about the organ this week ("LITTLE" FUGUE in G MINOR BWV 578 - JONATHAN SCOTT ORGAN). 1st grade listened to music by Francous Couperin. 2nd grade listened to more harpsichord music by Scarlatti (Sonata in d minor, K. 517, harpsichord).

Week Two

This week, Kindergarten and 1st grade worked on keeping a beat and discovering what beat was. Kindergarten learned how to clap syllables in words. 2nd and 3rd grade reviewed rhythm notation (quarter note, half note, etc) and practiced playing and feeling those rhythms.

1st grade began to listen to the music of Francois Couperin, 2nd grade to Domenico Scarlatti, and 3rd grade to Bach. All three learned a little about the harpsichord.

All grades worked on concert music. Kindergarten continues to develop Simple Gifts, and began to learn Frosty the Snowman (we learned what snow, snowmen, and coal were!). 1st grade continued to work on This Little Light of Mine, 2nd grade worked on Tongo, and 3rd grade worked on Canoe Song. Links for all these songs will hopefully be posted next week for home listening!

Week One

This week, all classes learned how to behave and move in the music room.

Kindergarten and 1st grade began learning how to sign and sing Sol, La, and Mi and clap quarter and eighth rhythms (Ta and Ti-Ti). They kept the beat to music and began learning their first concert pieces (Simple Gifts for Kindergarten, This Little Light of Mine for 1st).

2nd and 3rd grade began work in their theory books, took a look at their first concert piece (Tongo for 2nd, Canoe Song for 3rd), and played on the classroom barred percussion instruments.

Next week, Men's Chorus and Mallet Madness begin!
