Second grade listened to “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks” by Mussorgsky and discussed how dance can reflect music, while third grade learned about Scarlatti and the harpsichord.
Third grade's facts:
- Scarlatti was born in Italy
- Known for keyboard sonatas
- Sonata: a piece played, rather than sung (which is a cantata)
- Became good friends with Handel (whom we will learn about next week)
- Virtuoso on the harpsichord
- Virtuoso: someone who is skilled in an aspect of music. Being a virtuoso on the harpsichord means they are extremely good at playing harpsichord.
Kindergarten and first grade listened to "Run, Run" by Pinto and discovered the form of the piece by making motions to the music, then coloring a picture that matched the motions.
Second grade practiced their concert song Hine Ma Tov and Lightning! while third grade began work on Carol of the Bells as well as worked on Hanerot Halalu. Kindergarten has all three of their songs learned: I Have a Little Dreidel, Jingle Bells, and Down in the Valley. Now they will begin to develop concert/performance etiquette and add instrumental accompaniment. First grade continues to work on Somebody's Knockin' and Ma-o-Tzur, and this week began to learn Ring the Bells, It's Christmas!
The above songs that are yellow will link to a recording of the piece, so students can study at home! Note that some lyrics have been changed and the songs for second and third grades have two parts.
All grades know and can repeat patterns of quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests (Ta, Ti-Ti, Rest), along with the notes Do, Mi, Sol, and La.

Just a reminder that our concerts are mandatory and this year's Fall Concert will be held on Tuesday, November 15th at the Higley Center for the Performing Arts at 5:30 and 6:45 pm.
Fine Arts Night will be Monday, May 15 4:30pm-9:00pm!
