Week of August 22-26 Update

This week, second and third grade worked on sight-reading rhythms with quarter notes (Tas), eighth notes (Ti-tis) and rests. Second grade worked on labeling piano keys for theory, while third grade worked on reading the lines and spaces of the staff. Kindergarten learned the space note "C" on the staff, as well as reviewed A and B, while first grade further reviewed labeling notes on the piano keyboard and noticing the pattern of black-to-white keys. First grade and Kindergarten began to notate and sight-read iconic representations of quarter notes and rests.

Second grade continued to work on their concert repertoire song, Hine Ma Tov, and began work on their second song, Lightning! In third grade, we discovered that we could not sing Kyrie Canon in the concert since it had been sung last year, so that will be replaced with a song called Amani Utupe. This week, third grade began work on another concert song, Hanerot Halalu. First grade learned more of Somebody's Knockin' and began work on their next piece, Ma-o-tzur. Kindergarten reviewed Down in the Valley and learned their second concert song, I Have A Little Dreidel.

For our listening day, second grade listened to "Teasing" by Bela Bartok and discovered the instruments in a wind quintet. Third grade learned about the composer J.S. Bach and the organ. Third grade will be reviewing some key Bach facts next week for their upcoming test on the Baroque period:
  • Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany
  • He played violin, harpsichord and organ
  • He is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.
First grade and Kindergarten listened to "Viennese Clock" by Kodaly, discussed the mood of the song, kept the march-like beat, and colored a picture that reflected the composer's intent in the music.

In another update, both Men's Chorus and Women's Ensemble were merged into one group called Belle Voci, a choir for 3rd-5th graders, which meets every Wednesday at 7:15am. Students can be registered on Archway Chandler's website. Currently, Belle Voci is working on Hot Chocolate! and Put on a Happy Face.
