Last week, Kindergarten and first grade worked on the first two pages in their music theory books. Kindergarten covered the pattern of the black keys on the piano keyboard, which can help show what the names of the white keys are. First grade covered reading the first two letters of the musical alphabet on the staff: A and B.
Both Kindergarten and first grade worked on clapping and saying quarter notes/keeping a steady beat, as well as repertoire for the upcoming concert: Kindergarten worked on the folk song Down in the Valley, and first grade worked on Somebody's Knockin'. Both grades also listened to the classical piece "Morning" by Greig and colored a picture they believed represented the feeling of the song.
Kinderfarten's Song of the Month is If You're Happy and You Know It, while first grade's is Brother, Are You Sleeping?
Second grade worked on the first page of their theory books, finding the pattern of the black keys on the piano keyboard and labeling the names of the white keys. Third grade finished Lesson One of their books, which reviewed various rhythms.
Second grade listened to a song called "Simple Gifts" and discussed the historical group of people who created the song, the Shakers. Third grade learned about some distinctive characteristics of the Baroque period (1600-1750), such as ornamentation.
Both second and third grade worked on sight-reading Sol and Mi, as well as quarter notes and eighth notes. Both grades also worked on concert repertoire: second grade learned the beginning of Hine Ma Tov, and third grade began studying Kyrie Canon.
