Q2W8 - Renaissance and Baroque Music

We have been working on music theory lately. 2nd grade just finished learning the lines and spaces; now they will be working on memorizing/solidifying this knowledge. 3rd grade is reviewing the knowledge from last year and working on recognizing the notes fast. 4th and 5th grade are reviewing the notes and adding on complex rhythms. All grades have been playing notes from their concert music on the barred Orff instruments to practice.

4th and 5th grade are very briefly covering the Renaissance, before continuing onto the Baroque era.

This is from a serenata - a serenata is a hybrid between a cantata and an opera performed in evening hours out doors.

This Week: Medieval Music

This week, all grades learned about Medieval music. We learned about two instruments, the vielle and the shawm, since they will be evolving into modern instruments (oboe/basson and violin). We learned about plainchant, the Dies Irae, and a female composer named Hildegard of Bingen. Here are the videos we used, for students who wish to re-watch or finish watching:

The Concert Was Great!

What a wonderful performance! My thanks to all parents for coming and supporting the arts and their wonderful students!

The rest of the week was the performance of Ballet Etudes, a little Medieval history for 2nd grade, and instrument review for 3rd and 5th grade.

This week, we return to travels in music history! All grades filled out their note card for their History Passport, and 5th and 3rd grade were able to start learning about the Medieval Era. Next week, all grades will learn about plainchant, the Dies Irae, the shawm, and the vielle.
